Soon after the works to the house started (October 2023), we decided to address the fireplace, in order to be able to point internally over winter (keep the place a little warmer). We replaced the rotted lintel and installed a temporary flue and stove. This was dismantled again when the chimney was built and the stoves was removed to allow for the installation of the limecrete floor. We removed the concrete screed and while digging out the floor we came across a little paved section for the fire, in bricks and stones. This was recorded and removed, but we used the same stones in roughly the same arrangement to construct our new hearth. You can still see some numbers of the stones...
